Shaw’s customers donate through campaign

Shaw’s and Star Market customers donated more than 259,000 pounds of food to more than 140 local hunger relief organizations through a “Spirit of Giving” food drive during the past holiday season.
The bags of food will provide more than 199,000 meals to those in need. The supermarkets also donated an extra $52,000 to support local organizations that get food to those that need it.
From Nov. 27 through Jan. 1, store customers purchased virtual pre-assembled bags that contained much-needed non-perishable food for $5, $10 or $15. Once collected, the food was sent to community food banks and pantries throughout Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island.
All 155 Shaw’s and Star Market stores participated.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one in seven U.S. households experienced food insecurity last year.
