Sheehan presents $2,200 in legislative grants

PROVIDENCE – Sen. James C. Sheehan, D-Narragansett, last week presented a $1,300 legislative grant to the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation Inc., and a $900 legislative grant to the Quonset Air Museum.
According to a news release, the Saratoga Foundation is an all-volunteer group working to convert the retired Navy aircraft carrier into a nonprofit floating museum, attraction and technology center at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station.
The grant will help offset consultant costs for technical and engineering work necessary for the group’s application to the U.S. Navy.
The Quonset Air Museum in North Kingstown was founded in 1992 and is housed on 3 acres in an original Naval Air Station hangar built in 1945. The museum was established to educate the public about the state’s rich aviation legacy and to display collections that document Rhode Island’s contributions to the growth and development of aviation and space exploration.
The museum operators plan to use the legislative grant for ongoing repairs and restoration work at the facility. •
