Shelling out bragging rights

Twenty-one chefs competed to see who had the best chowder recipe at the 35th annual Great Chowder Cook-off on June 18. The event was hosted by Discover Newport and took place at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.

First place in the seafood chowder category went to Bristol-Plymouth Technical High School of Taunton, while Clifton Health Care of Somerset took home second prize; third place went to the Newport Marriott’s MainSail.

Hurricane’s Soup/Luke’s Lobster, from New York and Maine, won first prize in the clam chowder category, Warwick’s Open Season Catering came in second, and neighboring Grid Iron Ale House and Grille took third place.

“Best of the Best” was won by Davenport’s Restaurant, with locations in East Providence and Cumberland. •
