Sherman appointed permanent head of HealthSource

PROVIDENCE – Zachary Sherman, acting director of HealthSource RI, has been chosen to lead the state-run health benefits exchange, the state’s Department of Administration announced Tuesday.

Sherman has served as acting director since November 2015, when former director Anya Rader Wallack left the division on her appointment as state Medicaid director.

An original member of the team hired to design and then initiate the exchange, Sherman was the primary manager for establishment activities in the lead-up to the launch of HealthSource RI in October 2013.

He later became chief of staff. Since November, he has led the state exchange through its third enrollment period, among other responsibilities.

He will earn $146,026 annually and begins on March 6, according to a state spokeswoman. In a statement, Sherman said he was honored to have been chosen.

“I look forward to building on the work we’ve already accomplished to drive down the uninsured rate, to connect Rhode Island families and employers with affordable coverage, and to improve the customer experience,” Sherman said.
