Every few months it seems there’s another list giving Providence thumbs up or down compared to other cities nationally. Like nightlife, good food? Visit Providence. Need a job? Don’t limit your search to the capital city.
While all such rankings have their limits, the latest, however, is one local retailers are hoping to take to the bank this winter. According to Yelp, the city is one of the top 20 destinations in the nation for shopping this holiday season. Providence was No. 18 on the list, joining Portland, Maine, which ranked first, and Worcester, Mass., No. 16, as the only New England cities on the list.
The ranking was based on a survey that found eight in 10 Americans are likely to shop locally this holiday season. Yelp then analyzed millions of reviews and business listings to determine the most highly rated, local businesses.
Those who frequent Providence Place mall and the city’s many varied and eclectic shops would not be surprised by the ranking.
The city’s retailers, of course, are hoping the attention – and declining gas prices – will attract new money from shoppers willing to see what the fuss is about. If it does, this will be one list that pays off in more than just passing attention. •
