Shoreby Hill placed on Register

Posted:

JAMESTOWN – The Shoreby Hill neighborhood has been placed on the National Register of Historic places by the National Park Service, the R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission announced Wednesday.

Shoreby Hill was built as an exclusive summer cottage enclave on of the eastern shore of Jamestown starting in 1896.

The neighborhood now includes 90 properties on 54 acres and is “an excellent example of a planned garden suburb,” the Heritage Commission said in its announcement of the register listing.

The National Register listing gives the neighborhood special consideration during the planning of federally assisted projects and makes properties eligible for historic rehabilitation tax benefits.

The National Register nomination for Shoreby Hill Historic District was prepared by preservation consultant Arnold N. Robinson.
