Should Providence Police Chief Dean M. Esserman stay on the job?

Posted 3/22/10

The recent arrests by state police of Providence police officers for involvement in drug dealing and use, as well as questions of the department’s conduct in investigating the death of a young Massachusetts man last week, have many wondering about Providence Police Chief Dean M. Esserman’s effectiveness.

A controversial figure since arriving seven years ago, despite overseeing a decrease in major crimes in the city, Esserman’s support is seen as declining.

Has his reputation as a straight-shooting reformer been damaged too much for him to be effective going forward?

From the moment he stepped into Providence, Dean Esserman has been playing to the cameras- similar to his boss, David Cicilline.
