Should Providence ban residential development in Fox Point at the old Shooters property?


The Providence City Plan Commission voted to recommend that the city not allow residential development at the Shooters property on Fox Point, instead asking that facilities with public purposes, such as a marina, entertainment venue and/or restaurant be developed there.

The property is coming on the market as the R.I. Department of Transportation sells it following the DOT's purchase of the property during the relocation of Interstate 195.

One of the things that makes Providence - and RI - special is public access to its shoreline. Residential development is sure to result in decreased access - except for a "$pecial" few. This will have a long-term negative impact on drawing people (tourists, residents) to the area. Likewise, keeping this space accessible will foster longer term positive activities related to the waterfront. (Isn't this obvious?)

This is such a positive move on the part of the Providence CPC. So often there is shortsightedness around development issues in this city. A fully, publicly-accessible waterfront could do wonders for Providence which has not yet taken full advantage of being on the water in terms of tourist and resident-friendly development. This decision is refreshing and I commend the City Plan Commission members for their thoughtfulness on this issue.

Must be a lot of amnesia out there. The restaurant/marina thing was tried and failed. The value of the property would be much greater, as would the tax revenue, as a mixed use building. Look no farther than Bristol, or God forbid, Boston, to see how it works very well indeed.

I think the driving force here should be the taxpayers' return on the state's investment. The Iway project is a very expensive undertaking and we should be doing all we can to minimize its impact on the state's taxpayers and help reduce the deficit

Bad recommendation. The city and state should be doing all we can to maximize taxable propety and employment.

Providence is a large Ameican city...not a little town. Every piece of newly available land should be made available for large-tall-dense development. This site and the I-Wayoparcels provide Providence with great leverage to attract devlopment away from the Boston area.
