In his fiscal year 2012 budget proposal, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee asked that parking fees at state beaches be raised. The change – the first since 2002 – would generate an additional $1.9 million in revenue for the state, certainly not enough to close the budget hole.
However, many businesses that depend on beachgoers for their income are worried that the increase would have a negative impact on their livelihoods, without really being that effective at helping to close the state’s deficit.
