Should the public sector contribute to the prizes awarded to the winners of the Rhode Island Business Plan Competition?

Last week the Rhode Island Business Plan Competition announced the beginning of its 2013 edition, which will being with an Oct. 17 event at which last year’s winners will make presentations.

The event is the first in a series that is designed to help those individuals thinking of entering better understand what is needed to write and present a successful business plan.

While the competition has garnered support from many segments of the business community, does it make sense for the state to support the winners in tangible ways, either through cash grants or tax incentives that reward job growth in the Ocean State?

If the state and local taxes, as well as the endless licensing fees,were reasonable, no one would even think to offer cash incentives to propose a "business idea". Much less using tax payer dollars. Completely absurd.
