PROVIDENCE – Former Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons was Rhode Island’s highest paid college president in 2011 at just under $1.3 million, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, which ranked her 21st in the nation for the year.

On tax forms reported to the Internal Revenue Service and compiled by the Chronicle, Simmons earned $1,292,110 that year. The amount for Christina H. Paxson, who succeeded Simmons in July 2012, is not yet available.

The Chronicle published data for executive compensation received by 550 chief executives at 500 private nonprofit colleges in the United States during the 2011 calendar year.

The organization said it chose the private nonprofit baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral institutions with the 500 largest endowments, as reported to the U.S Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, or Ipeds. Rhode Island School of Design was not included, but a writer at The Chronicle supplied that college president’s compensation from the tax form to the Providence Business News.

Other private college presidents and their compensation in 2011 totaled:

  • John J. Bowen, Johnson & Wales University, $1,179,449 (No. 33 nationally)

  • Richard I. Gouse, New England Institute of Technology, $738,467 (No. 80)

  • Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University, $708,869 (No. 88)

  • John Maeda, Rhode Island School of Design, $558,116 (unranked)

  • Donald J. Farish, Roger Williams University, $260,077 (No. 405)

  • President Ronald O. Champagne, former Roger Williams University president, $162,839 (No. 478)

  • Sister Jane Gerety, Salve Regina University, $63,893 (No. 505)

  • Rev. Brian J. Shanley, Providence College, $59,195 (No. 506).

Compensation for presidents of Bristol Co., Mass., institutions included:

  • Rronald A. Crutcher, Wheaton College, $431,962 (No. 226)

  • Jean F. MacCormack, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (chancellor), $292,100 (unranked)

  • Rev. Mark T. Cregan, Stonehill College, $42,717 (No. 509)

Of the state’s three public schools, according to the R.I. Board of Governors for Higher Education, the top earner in 2011 was David M. Dooley, president of the University of Rhode Island, at $320,000. Ray DiPasquale, president of CCRI, earned $265,000, while Nancy Carriuolo, president of Rhode Island College, earned $200,197.
