Site prep works begins on Veterans Home

BRISTOL – Site preparation has begun on a $94 million project to replace the Rhode Island Veterans Home. Voters authorized bonds for the work in 2012. The 208-bed facility will be built on the 110-acre site of the existing Veterans Home and will provide a range of services, including skilled nursing care.
Under tentative plans, once the new facility is completed in 2017, the older structure will be razed, according to Michael Jolin, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Human Services.
A groundbreaking ceremony, held on the site Friday, included Gov. Gina M. Raimondo and U.S. Reps. James Langevin and David N. Cicilline.
More than 400 construction workers are expected to be employed on the project over the next two years, according to a release. The new facility has been designed to match updated federal standards for community living centers, which emphasize independent living and provide additional spaces for socialization.
The first Veterans Home was constructed in 1890 and when it opened, served the veterans of the U.S. Civil War, and provided meals for veterans as well as living space. The existing facility opened in 1955, with additions completed in 1969, 1976 and 1989.
Peregrine Group will lead the design and construction of the project. Brewster Thornton Group Architects will provide architectural and engineering services. Gilbane Construction will be construction manager.
