NEW YORK – Six local schools have ranked among the 378 best in the nation according to the Princeton Review’s annual college book, released Monday.
The book, called “The Best 378 Colleges,” included two-page reviews of Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College, Stonehill College, the University of Rhode Island and Wheaton College.
Brown’s review highlighted the school’s open curriculum, while Bryant’s focused on the “rigorous curriculum” of the school’s business programs. The review of PC noted that the college’s small class size means students interact more with professors and administrators.
According to the book, Stonehill helped students “work toward nurturing the whole person through a comprehensive education.” Princeton Review noted URI’s strong science and engineering programs and connections to the world outside the school.
Wheaton’s profile highlighted the school’s strong faculty and small class size.
Rather than rank all 378 colleges academically, the book listed the top 20 schools in 62 categories covering topics such as academics, campus life, financial aid and athletics. The rankings were based on 80-question surveys taken by 126,000 students nationwide, or an average of 333 per campus, in the last three school years.
Brown came in at 20th on the “Best College Radio” list.
PC ranked fourth for “Everyone Plays Intramural Sports,” eighth for “Lots of Hard Liquor” and “Town-Gown Relations are Strained” and 10th for “Little Race/Class Interaction.” The school came in 19th on the “Financial Aid Not So Great” list.
URI was ninth on the “LGBT Unfriendly” list, 10th on “Financial Aid Not So Great” and 11th on “Administrators Get Low Marks.”
Wheaton came in seventh for “College City Gets Low Marks.”
Bryant and Stonehill were both profiled but did not make any top-20 lists.
