Six local colleges named among Princeton Review’s ‘Best 379’

PROVIDENCE – Six schools in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., have been listed among The Princeton Review’s 2015 “Best 379 Colleges.”

Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College, Stonehill College, the University of Rhode Island and Wheaton College were all recognized in the rankings released Monday, which were based on The Princeton Review’s survey of 130,000 students attending the 379 colleges on the list.

In addition to the main listing, The Princeton Review also ranked the colleges in categories related to academics, campus diversity, quality of living, extracurricular activities and social scene.

Brown University, URI and Stonehill College each received recognition among The Princeton Review’s 332 “Green Colleges,” those schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability. In addition, Brown University was previously named among the Review’s “150 Best Value Colleges” in the United States and Providence College ranked No. 9 for its high student participation in intramural sports.

However, several local colleges and universities received poor marks from The Princeton Review. Providence College ranked No. 3 among campuses with “lots of hard liquor.” Providence College also ranked No. 9 in a listing of the schools with little interaction between students of different races and socioeconomic classes and No. 14 among schools with strained “town-gown relations.”

URI, meanwhile, ranked No. 9 on The Princeton Review’s list of among schools with administrators who receive low marks from students, No. 12 among schools with limited financial aid and No. 18 among schools with professors who receive low marks from students.

Finally, Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., ranked No. 7 for the low marks students gave the campus town as well as No. 11 for strained town-gown relations.
