(PROVIDENCE, R.I.) — Herb Stevens, the Skiing Weatherman joins the ABC6 news team on Thursday December 3. His forecasts will air Thursdays and Fridays on ABC6 during Good Morning Providence, on NEWSCHANNEL 5 Thursday through Friday between 7 and 8 am, Thursday and Friday afternoon on ABC6 First at Four and Saturday morning on NEWSCHANNEL 5. “Herb provides an excellent service to Southern New England skiers. For years they’ve turned to Herb for fast, accurate and reliable forecasts and ski conditions before hitting the slopes,” according to ABC6 News Director BJ Finnell. “He is a welcome addition to our award winning team of meteorologists.”
“I look forward to providing ABC6 and NewsChannel 5 viewers with the latest ski conditions before they head up north,” stated Stevens, a resident of North Kingstown. “Now that my reports air on ABC6 and NewsChannel 5, Southern New England viewers have more opportunities to watch and be informed!”
Herb Stevens has spent much of his professional career on the road less traveled. After graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 1975, Herb elected to see the world as a caddy on the PGA Tour for five years before launching his career as a meteorologist. After one year at WJAR-TV in Providence, RI, Herb became one of the original on-camera meteorologists at The Weather Channel. A year and a half later, he became the Chief Meteorologist at WNYT-TV in Albany, NY. As part of his duties at WNYT, Herb pioneered a weekly on-snow ski report, which in 1988 became his full-time job, The Skiing Weatherman.
The Skiing Weatherman is Herbs primary focus, reaching 30 markets and approximately 15-18 million viewers on a weekly basis. In addition to the weekly television report, Herb writes twice-weekly weather summaries for www.snocountry.com during the winter sports season.
Along the way, Herb has also racked up an interesting series of other broadcasting credits, including LPGA and PGA play-by-play on ESPN, The Golf Channel, PGA TOUR Network, and PGA TOUR.com. In addition, Herb was part of TNT s coverage team at the 1999 Winter Goodwill Games in Lake Placid, NY, and was the feature reporter and interviewer for CBS s coverage of the 1997 World Nordic Ski Championships in Norway.
