SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South County Hospital is one of the first hospitals in New England to use the smallest cardiac monitor available.
It received federal approval in February of this year, and since then South County Cardiology’s Dr. Steven Fera has implanted several of the devices. He is pleased with the results.
The new implant is significantly smaller than the last generation.
“The device can be inserted in a setting outside the operating room or cath lab and takes only a few minutes,” he noted. “No IV or special preparation is required and the patient can drive home after the procedure and immediately return to work or normal activity.”
The monitor has clear advantages, starting with continuous cardiac monitoring, which can significantly benefit those with unexplained symptoms that are often a sign of underlying heart conditions. •
