PROVIDENCE – Providence County has the lowest tax burden among Rhode Island’s five counties, according to a SmartAsset study released Wednesday.
Providence County has lower property taxes and fuel taxes, at an average $3,747 and $402, respectively, boosting it to No. 1 list.
The second place slot went to Kent County, with property tax and fuel tax costs of $3,738 and $464, and third place was held by Newport County with property tax and fuel tax costs of $4,215 and $423.
Next was Washington County at $4,180 and $461, respectively, with Bristol County in the last spot, at $4,896 and $435.

To come up with its rankings, the financial technology company said it analyzed what a person making the U.S. median income pays in income, sales, property and fuel tax in counties across the country.
It said Rhode Island’s state income and sales tax are near the national average.

SmartAsset noted that the sales tax in Rhode Island is 7 percent. It said that the statewide average effective property tax rate – property taxes as a percentage of home value – is 1.55 percent. SmartAsset said this is the 10th highest in the U.S., and added that the average homeowner pays nearly $4,000 a year in property taxes in Rhode Island.
The company also said the Ocean State has the 11th highest gas tax in the country. The tax is equal to 33 cents per gallon, which would add up to $165 per year for someone who drives 12,500 miles in a car that averages 25 miles per gallon.
Rhode Island’s tax on cigarettes is the third highest in the U.S. at $3.50 on a pack of 20, which is 17.5 cents per cigarette, SmartAsset said.
