Smithfield Playground Seeks Pepsi Grant, Needs Votes

9/20/11 02:27 PM

[SMITHFIELD, RI] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- The Old County Road Playground Project, Smithfield is currently fundraising to build a new playground at Old County Road School (OCRS). A timeline of 100 weeks has been set to raise the approximately $70K needed for new equipment, landscaping, installation of a paved walking path, and refurbishment of the current basketball court and playing field. The two existing playgrounds adjacent to OCRS were built over 30 years ago and require replacement.

To fast-forward the hefty goal, the committee has entered a contest at the Pepsi Refresh Project. Where Pepsi funds “amazing ideas that refresh the world,” like playgrounds. The Pepsi Refresh Project’s tagline is “Dream it, submit it, get enough votes and we'll help make it happen for your community!”

To win the $50,000, The Old County Road Playground Project must get enough votes. Participants may vote twice each day during the month of September. To vote, simply visit http://www.refresheverything.com/oldcountyroadplaygroundproject and / or text 108786 to Pepsi (73774).

“Winning the grant would make the playground happen so much faster,” says The Old County Road Playground Project Co-Chair Jill Fontaine, “and we would raise the necessary funds without having to tap into the pockets of community members.”

About The Old County Road Playground Project

Founded in 2011, a group of parents and teachers concerned with the state and safety of The Old County Road School playground formed a committee to raise funds to build a new playground. The initiative, presented as a community park would provide not only safe structures on which school children could play but a park, walking path, and gathering place for the residents of East Smithfield who currently do not have such an area. The committee has set a goal of raising the necessary funds by June 2013; one hundred weeks.
