PROVIDENCE – Peter J. Snyder, senior vice president and chief research officer at Lifespan, has been named chairman of the 10-member Rhode Island Neurosciences Leadership and Steering Committee.
The panel is leading a collaboration of Rhode Island’s research institutions engaged in the brain sciences.
Dr. Steven Rasmussen, chair of the department of psychiatry and human behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and representing Care New England on the committee, will serve as vice chair.
The committee also announced that it has $200,000 in seed money. The committee is working on an assessment of the organizations’ resources and capabilities, and identifying shared interests in the neurosciences.
Last year, a memorandum of understanding was signed by leadership from Lifespan, Brown University, University of Rhode Island, Care New England and the Providence VA Medical Center.
The five institutions will focus on identifying causes and potential treatments for diseases and disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury and autism.
“The neurosciences are a broad area of study, one in which we have the potential to effect some real advancements in our lifetime,” Snyder said in a statement. “It is not commonplace for academic and medical institutions to collaborate, rather than compete. The sharing of mutual goals by these institutions will allow us to maximize our resources, in terms of personnel, physical research space, and, of course, funding. I am honored to have been chosen as the first leader of this exciting endeavor.”
Snyder’s term expires June 30, 2017; Rasmussen then will become chair.
