Society renews Taylor contract

NEWPORT – Ruth Taylor, the Newport Historical Society’s executive director, has accepted a five-year contract renewal through 2019, the organization said.
“I’m looking forward to working with the board [of directors] to build upon, and solidify, the work we’ve begun,” said Taylor.
Some of that work has included continued growth with the restoration of the Great Friends and the Seventh Day Baptist meeting houses; development of the Brick Market Museum Shop to support revenue; the Newport Antiques Show; digital initiatives such as the online database, Gladys; and the app Explore Historic Newport.
The nonprofit also has promoted Ingrid Peters to associate director. Formerly the director of education, Peters has overseen the Buchanan/Burnham internship program, which has helped to launch the careers of museum professionals. She also has helped build the Society’s seasonal lectures, and led a successful tour program.
In her new role, Peters will manage staff and work to further the Society’s various projects.
Society board President Thomas Goddard said the news about personnel gives him confidence in the organization’s future.
“I can’t think of a better team to lead our efforts to expand programming and outreach to ensure that Newport’s important early history is made more accessible and better known,” he said.
