South County offers ‘mini’ hip replacement

WAKEFIELD – South County Hospital is now offering a new kind of hip replacement, which is less invasive and allows patients to recover more quickly, hospital officials announced on July 20.
Dr. Robert Marchand, a member of the South County Hospital Orthopedics Center team, is the first – and only – orthopedic surgeon in Rhode Island certified in the new “mini-hip” replacement surgery, hospital officials said.
The Corin MiniHip system, developed specifically for younger, more active patients with hip problems, allows surgeons to conserve significantly more bone than a conventional total hip replacement.
“The size and shape of the Corin MiniHip stem makes it easier for me to utilize a minimally invasive muscle-sparing surgical technique that I have found helps my patients recover more quickly from surgery and spend less time in the hospital,” said Dr. Marchand.
This new hip surgery gives orthopedic surgeons the ability to use highly detailed hip joint scans. These scans are designed to provide a more anatomic restoration compared to many conventional hip systems in use today. The mini hip procedure combines the bone-conserving benefits of hip resurfacing with the stability of a traditional total hip replacement.
More than 300,000 hip replacement surgeries were conducted in the United States last year.
