PROVIDENCE – Construction of a new parking garage to support tenants of South Street Landing will begin this week, and will require the long-term closure of a northbound lane on Eddy Street.
The $220 million project by CV Properties LLC and Wexford Science & Technology, a BioMed Realty company, will include the 744-space parking garage, a renovation of the former electrical power plant building, and construction of new apartments for nursing and graduate students.
The garage, facing Eddy Street, will provide parking for tenants of South Street Landing, including the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center and Brown University administrative offices, as well as tenants of Davol Square, where the existing parking lot will be consumed by the South Street Landing housing construction.
The lane closure of a northbound lane on Eddy Street, for several hundred feet between South and Ship streets, will begin Jan. 7 and continue for a year, through December, according to Eric Cote, a South Street Landing project spokesman.
The sidewalk also will be closed in that segment, and pedestrians will be directed to the west side of Eddy Street.
The lane closure is required to ensure enough separation between the construction activity and traffic, Cote said. Motorists who commute to downtown Providence using Eddy Street should either find an alternate route or account for delays.
The lane has been closed periodically for the past month.
