PROVIDENCE – Sovereign Bank, the fourth-largest bank in Rhode Island by deposits, officially adopted the name, brand and logo of its parent company, Spanish banking group Santander, at a rebranding ceremony held Thursday morning at the bank’s One Financial Plaza branch in Providence.

More than 700 branches and 2,000 ATMs will adopt the Santander brand – and its red flame logo evoking the initial “S” in Santander – as of Oct. 17, the bank announced.

“The official name change and rebranding will enhance the way we serve our customers and our communities, bringing greater opportunities for both,” said Brian Azar, Santander region president for southern New England.

Azar joined bank officials, local dignitaries, community leaders and customers in unveiling the new logo, which the company said is designed to symbolize “triumph, leadership, clear-sightedness and dynamism.”

“Businesses will see the same high quality services that our bank has always provided, with the added benefits that Santander will offer through its strong international network,” said John Silva, commercial banking market manager for Santander. “This rebranding is a tremendous opportunity to enhance the customer experience.”
