Sports facility in Quonset to break ground next month

NORTH KINGSTOWN - Groundbreaking for a new indoor sports facility in the Quonset Business Park is tentatively slated for next month and if all goes well, owners Dan Fawcett and Stephen Sangermano will have the complex up and running by August 2012.

“We are expecting that work on the foundation will begin sometime in January,” Sangermano said.

In August, the two men announced their company, Wide World of Indoor Sports, would build a new facility in North Kingstown. The owners said it would be similar to their existing Pound Road, North Smithfield location.

Development and management of the 3,207 acre Quonset Business Park is the responsibility of the Quonset Development Corporation, a real estate development and property management company formed in 2005.

“The parcel was pre-designed and pre-engineered to meet all of our development regulations for site, drainage, and parking,” said Katherine Trapani, planning manager for the Quonset Development Corporation. “It was pre-permitted by [the R.I. Department of Environmental Management].”

“The plans that were submitted for Wide World of Indoor Sports are nearly identical to what the pre-designed structure and parking were, but we still go through the review process to make sure it meets all of our regulations, which we fully expect, and then we need to review building plans, utility connections, fire suppression and plumbing, which were not pre-designed,” she said.

Trapani said QDC will coordinate with Sangermano and the building official for a foundation permit, and confirmed the project could be started within weeks.

The 76,000 square foot Quonset complex will have four non-boarded turf fields, and will be located at 215 Romano Vineyard Way, in the Quonset Gateway District. Programs will be offered for all ages, including adult leagues, youth leagues, youth classes, camps and tournaments. Sports offered will include soccer, flag football, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, wiffleball and more.

Once complete, the Quonset and North Smithfield locations are expected to employ about 85 full and part-time employees.
