Springer a Thumbtack Best

Karen Springer, owner of Johnston-based Spring Forward Resumes, was recently named a winner of the Thumbtack Best of 2015 Award for excellent customer reviews. Prior to starting her company, Springer worked for 13 years at major banks and at a local newspaper, holding business writing, journalism, human resources, marketing and contract-management positions. She rose up the ranks, holding senior-level positions at Bank of America and Citizens Bank. She holds an MBA from Norwich University.

What made you choose to open Spring Forward Companies?

When I was laid off from my job in late 2012, it was a life-changing event. I reflected on my lifelong love for writing and helping people and decided to start my own business from the perspective of someone who has been unemployed. I had been writing resumes for friends and family for years on the side, and I began the business on a freelance basis in early 2013. I officially founded Spring Forward in August 2014.

What are some ‘red flags’ that you frequently see?

People confuse a resume with a job history. As a result, they list every job they’ve ever had, along with every detail of the job duties. A resume should only go back 10 years maximum, and it should demonstrate what you’ve accomplished in each job. If a hiring manager has to sift through a long history with too many details, they’ll skip reading it. Also, clients often have resumes that are more than two pages. If a resume is longer than that, it won’t get read. Finally, many clients have typos or incorrect grammar in their resumes, which will automatically disqualify even the most qualified candidate.

What other services do you provide?

I provide business services via Write Way Consulting, my business division, which is a full-service writing and editing firm committed to providing professional writing and editing services [such as] blog and article writing, contract terms and conditions, and fact checking. •
