PROVIDENCE – Startup Sproutel will receive nearly $150,000 in federal funding through the Small Business Innovation Research program, U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline said Friday.
The congressmen on Monday afternoon will visit Sproutel, which makes interactive teaching toys for children diagnosed with chronic illness, to celebrate the award, and will hear from its leadership team about its plans to grow the business in Rhode Island.
SBIR grants help American small businesses engage in federal research and development that has the potential to bring new products and services to market, according to a news release from Whitehouse.
Sproutel will use its SBIR funding to continue work on technology to provide health and wellness training for children with Type 1 diabetes. The company developed a toy, “Jerry the Bear,” to help children with diabetes learn how to manage their care.
Whitehouse and Cicilline will be joined by representatives from the R.I. Commerce Corporation and Providence business incubator BetaSpring.
Sproutel is a graduate of BetaSpring and participates in Commerce RI’s Innovate Rhode Island Small Business Fund program.
