EAST GREENWICH – Working within the guidelines of an approved exception to the state moratorium on new nursing home beds, St. Elizabeth Home recently broke ground on a set of four new, small-footprint nursing homes.

The homes will each have 12 private bedrooms and bathrooms arrayed around a central living space that includes a large kitchen, a dining room and a hearth room. Each home is approximately 8,000 square feet in size, and all four are expected to be completed in 2016.

The more intimate style of residency and care is in keeping with a nationwide trend away from larger, more institutional-feeling facilities.
