Starkweather acquires Conn. firm

EAST PROVIDENCE – An East Providence-based insurance firm this month announced its acquisition of a Connecticut independent insurance agency.
Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage Inc., Rhode Island’s largest independent insurance agency, acquired McDonough & Keegan Insurance Agency based in East Berlin, Conn., according to a press release.
McDonough & Keegan, founded in 1996 by owner Jay McDonough Jr., is an insurance agency focused primarily on dental programs, but subsequent to the acquisition the firm aims to expand its products and services to the health care market and middle market business to create “one-step shopping for all lines of insurance,” according to McDonough.
“[It’s] the Starkweather and Shepley way,” McDonough said in a statement.
The acquisition expands Starkweather & Shepley’s footprint in Connecticut, which is something the insurance agency is always looking to do, according to Nat Calamis, president and CEO.
“The firm has been in business for over 135 years and we take great pride in our reputation for providing quality insurance products and excellent customer service,” Calamis said. “We are very excited to have McDonough and Keegan and Jay join the Connecticut operation.”
Starkweather & Shepley is currently the 69th largest insurance brokerage firm in the United States, according to Business Insurance Magazine’s Top 100 List of Insurance Brokerages for 2014.
The firm provides commercial and personal insurance, health and employee benefits, surety bonding and risk management services. Headquartered in East Providence, it also has branches in Westerly and Bristol along with Shelton, Conn., Westwood, Sturbridge and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and Fort Meyers, Fla.
