Glenn Carraher, vice president at Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage, was recently awarded “Top Producer” in the energy insurance broker community for the second year in a row by Energi, an insurance firm that works with carriers to provide custom insurance coverage options.
Carraher, who was awarded the 2006 New Business and 2011 Retention Producer of the Year awards by Energi, has been in the insurance industry for more than 30 years. Previously, he served as manager at Liberty Mutual Insurance Group in the New Bedford and Providence offices.

PBN: In what ways do you work with Energi clients to reduce potential losses?
CARRAHER: I assist with this process by showing my clients all the trainings and educational opportunities on safety that Energi has to offer. For instance, [Energi representatives provide] fuel-oil dealers with training programs [that help] avoid fuel-oil-spill losses. [They provide] best practices on how to run an operation safely. Once a year I go to an annual risk-management seminar that Energi runs. There are all kinds of industry experts that give speeches and seminars. It’s a great learning and networking experience.

PBN: What new trends/practices in risk management and safety have emerged in the industry over the last few years?
CARRAHER: Technology has made a strong impact on the way companies handle risk management and safety over the last few years. Energi has implemented many new programs to thoroughly educate and train their clients. EnergiLive, for example is a technology platform that provides companies with up-to-date information, industry best safety practices, video trainings and live webinars. Each video and training is catered toward specific industries and sectors of the energy business making it comprehensive. [Clients find it easy to transition to these platforms] because the Energi programs are very user friendly.
PBN: How did S&S’s partnership with Energi form and why?
CARRAHER: Energi was formed in [2006] by key insurance professionals who had decades of experience on insurance for energy-related risks. The Starkweather strategic alliance was formed as a result of a need to gain more specific professional insurance knowledge with regards to energy-related risks. We recognized they were the foremost experts for energy-related risks such as fuel-oil, propane and gasoline dealers, and service station/convenience store operators. •
