State-employee union shoots down contract

PROVIDENCE – Members of one of the labor unions that represent state employees voted down a proposed new contract last month, WPRI-TV CBS 12 reported on its website.
The Service Employees International Union Local 580 voted 91-64 to reject the contract, the union’s president told the station.
According to WPRI, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced in April that his administration had reached a tentative agreement with all unionized state employees aside from the R.I. Brotherhood of Correctional Officers and state police on a new four-year contract retroactive to last July. It would provide three 2 percent raises between last month and October 2015.
Council 94 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the state’s largest public-sector union, approved the contract in May.
SEIU 580, also known as the Rhode Island Alliance of Social Service Employees, represents employees in agencies including the R.I. Department of Human Services, the R.I. Department of Children, Youth & Families, the R.I. Department of Business Regulation and the R.I. Division of Public Utilities and Carriers. •
