State expands free pre-K program, total now 17

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Education will add two pre-kindergarten program sites in Warwick and Cranston this fall.
The new sites for 2014-15 include Child Inc. at 160 Draper Ave., in Warwick, and the Comprehensive Community Action Program at 848 Atwood Ave. in Cranston. The additional sites bring the total number to 17. They serve the communities of Warwick, Cranston, Central Falls, Newport, Pawtucket, Providence, West Warwick and Woonsocket.
The governor and lawmakers fully funded the early childhood education budget for fiscal year 2015 at $2.95 million.
Entering its sixth year, the program provides free pre-kindergarten classes to eligible children. RIDE oversees the program. Statewide, spaces are available for 306 children, who are selected by lottery. •
