State supports city and town recreation with $6.3M in grants

(Updated, 4:21 p.m.)
PROVIDENCE – The state awarded $6.3 million in grants to 26 communities to improve recreational facilities.

The grants will help fund 50 projects including new ballfields, basketball courts, tennis courts, skate parks, camp pavilions, picnic areas, nature trails and restrooms.

“From Burrillville to New Shoreham, these grants will allow local communities to invest in our outdoor recreational assets, as well as have the opportunity to upgrade facilities and create local jobs.” Said Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee in a news release. “Great parks encourage people to get outside, be active and get healthy. They also showcase the benefits of living in our communities.”

The grants are being paid for through the state’s 2012 Open Space Bond Authorization, and they all require a match of varying size from the community.
