State welcomes small-business suggestions on regulation

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee last week unveiled the R.I. Office of Management and Budget’s new online “suggestion box” for Rhode Island small businesses interested in contributing to the state’s regulatory reform process.
Through the suggestion box, members of the business community will be able to provide feedback on specific regulations – as well as other topics – at their convenience. In addition, businesses will be able to articulate the impact that rules and regulations have on them and offer suggestions for improvement.
“During its regulatory review, the Office of Regulatory Reform discovered that regulators that actively seek the input of small businesses have a better sense of the costs and benefits associated with regulation,” said Peter M. Marino, director of the OMB, in a statement. “This new tool improves the office’s ability to track issues and stay current on trends in the business community – it allows the office to continually update agencies on problem areas and better serve as a small business advocate.”
Last week, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island announced that Marino would join the company as its new CEO, effective Sept. 1. Chafee’s administration has yet to announce Marino’s successor in the OMB.
The Small Business Suggestion Box is located on the Office of Management and Budget’s new website at www.omb.ri.gov. Businesses with concerns regarding active permitting or regulatory matters may also contact the ORR Small Business Ombudsman at (401) 574-8426.
