PROVIDENCE – Michael Steinberg, Brown University’s director of the Cogut Center for the Humanities, has been appointed vice provost for the arts, effective in January.
Steinberg, who is also the Barnaby Conrad and Mary Critchfield Keeney Professor of History, a professor of music and professor of German studies, will oversee and lead strategies for Brown’s arts initiative. The post is a newly created one aligned with “Building on Distinction,” the university’s strategic plan. Steinberg will remain director of the Cogut Center through June 30.
Brown’s arts initiative will expand existing programs and bring new projects in the creative and performing arts to campus.
“Given Michael’s deep expertise as a scholar and academic leader, he is supremely qualified to lead Brown’s efforts to achieve even greater levels of distinction,” said Brown Provost Vicki Leigh Colvin. •
