Stephen R. Ucci’s job is all about risk. It’s just that instead of facing danger, he’s spends a lot of time trying to avoid it.

The stakes are high. Ucci, 39, serves as senior counsel for the defense contractor Raytheon Co. and general counsel for the company’s Integrated Defense Seapower unit, which employs 3,500 and posts $1 billion in sales annually.

As general counsel, Ucci said, he acts as Seapower’s chief risk and compliance officer, reviewing contracts, managing litigation and negotiating complex transactions, among other things.

“I am also a business partner looking for financial risk and opportunity working closely with the management team,” Ucci said in his 40 Under Forty application. “I engage our new business teams early to understand the opportunity, analyze the risk and offer solutions that mitigate the risk and maximize value.”

Ucci, a Johnston resident, started his legal career at the Providence law firm of Voccola & Landry in 1996. Two years later, he joined Waltham, Mass.-based Raytheon, which is a major employer in Rhode Island. He’s worked his way up ever since – even earning certification as a Six Sigma specialist – and is now responsible for all legal issues facing the massive Seapower unit.

His work has earned him the Raytheon Business Development award, the only time a Raytheon lawyer has been so honored, he said.

Ucci, who has been a state representative since 2004 and serves as deputy majority leader in the R.I. General Assembly, credits at least some of his success to the late R.I. Supreme Court Justice John P. Bourcier.

“Justice Bourcier taught me to be a good listener, and to respect the power an attorney has,” Ucci said. •
