PROVIDENCE – State regulators have granted Steward Health Care, the for-profit hospital system that owns 10 hospitals in Massachusetts, a two-week extension to submit a completed application in its bid to purchase Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket.

The completed application had been due Dec. 27; under the two-week extension, the new due date is Jan. 11.

No details have been provided by either the R.I. Department of Health and the R.I. Attorney General’s office about what additional information from Steward Health Care and Landmark Medical Center has been requested, related to the purchase. The two agencies “have identified issues that have not been sufficiently addressed by the transacting parties in the initial application,” according to a news release issued Thursday evening.

The two agencies are reviewing the bid by Steward under the state’s Hospital Conversions Act.

“This is a one-time extension that takes into consideration and recognizes the importance of Landmark Hospital to the Woonsocket community and the three years that the hospitals have been in a court-appointed special mastership,” said Dr. Michael Fine, director of the R.I Department of Health. “We are providing this opportunity as a continuation of our collaborative efforts to assure that essential healthcare services in northern Rhode Island remain available.”
