Stitch in time here saves $$

People head into coffee shops to surf the Web, why not to stitch a pillow? That was the thinking behind a new business in North Providence, Whipstitch Sewing Café, which combines hot coffee with sewing machine rentals.

You can sip as you sew, for $6 an hour.

The business opened in May at 1006 Charles St. Owner Stephanie Simas said she modeled it after the concept of an Internet café, which draws customers for coffee and Internet access.

At Whipstitch, patrons can choose among five sewing machines. The café also has an ironing board, a cutting table and other staples of sewing, such as pin cushions, thread and scissors.

Simas, who learned to sew as an adult, is available to help guide newcomers, although so far not much help has been required. “Anyone can sew a pillow,” she said. •
