EASTON - Stonehill College admitted 244 fewer applicants for the current fall semester in an attempt to relieve pressure on the college’s housing resources, the Boston Business Journal reported Friday.

Stonehill received 6,549 applications for the current fall semester, a 7 percent increase from last year’s 6,114 applications, but accepted 244 fewer applicants on a year-over-year basis. The incoming class of freshmen dropped 25 percent to 619 from last year’s 820.

Martin McGovern, a spokesman for Stonehill College, told the Boston Business Journal that on-campus housing accommodates a capacity of approximately 2,200 students. Total enrollment for the 2012-2013 academic year rose to 2,601, he said, while this year’s enrollment totaled 2,491.

As a result of Stonehill’s decision to admit fewer freshmen, the college expects a $1.7 million decline in gross tuition and fee revenue for the current fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, the Boston Business Journal said.

Last year, tuition and fees totaled $54.2 million, a 4 percent increase over the $52.2 million reported in fiscal 2012.
