PROVIDENCE – A donation today of 1,000 turkeys from Stop & Shop to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank marks the start of the 2012 Food Bank’s Holiday Meal Drive which will run through Dec. 31.
The food bank hopes to collect an additional 350,000 pounds of food during the drive to meet increased demand for food assistance in Rhode Island.
“The turkeys are a terrific centerpiece to a holiday meal, and they’re also a great source of protein,” said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, in a statement. “Now we need the community to pitch in and help us finish setting the table with healthy foods that will create a balanced meal every day of the month.”
Stop & Shop plans to donate a total of 21,000 turkeys to local food foods throughout the Northeast before Thanksgiving.
The food bank will accept donations of non-perishable food and financial donations during the drive. Food donations can be dropped off every weekday at the food bank’s office on Niantic Avenue in Providence. Most needed items include peanut butter, canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, dried or canned beans, pasta, rice, cereals, and canned soups.
The food bank also will host a Holiday Meal Drive open house on Saturday, Dec. 15 at its office. Visitors that day can tour the facility and meet celebrity guests including Miss Rhode Island and Miss Teen Rhode Island as well as participate in scavenger hunts.
