Stop & Shop employees help McAuley

STOP & SHOP employees from around Rhode Island recently participated in a company-sponsored volunteer day at McAuley Village, performing yard work and preparing apartments for new families.

Employees from Stop & Shop locations throughout Rhode Island recently gathered to lend a hand at McAuley Ministries’ McAuley Village. The volunteers helped to paint three apartments in preparation for new families, spread mulch on the playground and perform additional yard work throughout the grounds.

McAuley Village Administrator Rev. Michele Matott estimated that the volunteer work was worth at least $3,000 in painting and landscaping costs. In addition, the volunteers from Stop & Shop brought their own tools for the yard work, eliminating the need for McAuley Village to buy them.

“These things add up for a nonprofit serving those in dire need,” said Rev. Matott.

McAuley Ministries, a nonprofit on the south side of Providence, is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community. It provides transitional housing at McAuley Village in addition to operating a child care learning center, thrift store and the McAuley House meal site.

Stop & Shop began partnering with McAuley earlier this year by donating laundry baskets of household goods.

Shawn Lynch, district director for Stop & Shop, said, “It’s a part of what we do. The commitment to the communities we serve is a core value.”
