PROVIDENCE – Non-thunderstorm wind gusts topping 60 miles per hour in some parts of the state left nearly 25,000 Rhode Islanders without power this morning.

As of 8 a.m., 24,745 customers were without power, according to National Grid spokesperson David Graves. As of 10:30 a.m., 13,509 customers were still without power in Rhode Island.

At 8 a.m., 32,453 customers in Massachusetts were in the dark. As of 10:30, 20,211 National Grid customers were still without power in the Bay State. Of those, 1,155 were residents of Bristol County, Mass.

Although the National Weather Service’s high wind warning has expired, there is still a wind advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Wind advisories are issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 miles per hour, or gusts are expected to range between 46 and 57 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service warned that winds this strong are capable of downing small tree limbs and branches, which could cause isolated power outages. The weather service also added that driving, especially high profile vehicles, can be difficult in strong winds.
