When Peter Crump and Matt Dempsey became business partners at Providence-based general-contracting firm Site Specific LLC back in 2007, the duo worked out of a basement with three employees for six months.
Over the past seven years, things have certainly changed.
Site Specific – founded as a New York City general-contracting boutique firm focused on art-world buildouts for galleries, museums, artists and collectors – incorporated in Rhode Island in 2006. It has transformed into a $12 million company with 26 employees, working primarily on the rehab and restoration of historic buildings.
“Our focus is on streamlining the construction process,” Crump said of the firm’s notable growth. “[Effort] has to be a daily occurrence, taking what your bag of tricks has, reapplying it and allowing it to manifest in a different way that works for the task at hand. We see this everywhere: from design and construction details to organizational details.”And this original thinking has certainly paid off in terms of expansion.
In just the past year, the company has completed two high-profile projects at the Harvard Business School. The first, a renovation in the i-lab, consisted of rerouting and installing new digital equipment, screen displays and monitors. The other, at the Baker Library, involved an interior renovation to the Knowledge and Library Services space.
“We are continuing to build on our successes of the past and develop new clientele at the same time,” Crump said. “One of our staff said it best, ‘If you can’t get excited about construction, what can you get excited about?’ ”
