Students get interview, financial lessons

PROVIDENCE – More than 35 city high school students recently boosted both job-search and financial-literacy skills through workshops hosted by Fidelity Investments and Rhode Island for Community & Justice.
Held earlier this month at the University of Rhode Island’s Providence Feinstein campus, the “Invest in Our Youth” workshops connected students to members of Aspire, Fidelity’s Latino and Black Employee Resource Group.
James Kihungi, a Fidelity employee and a member of the board of directors of Rhode Island for Community & Justice, saw the opportunity for his Aspire colleagues to share their expertise with area students.
“Often, many students graduate from high school without an introduction to managing a budget, resume building, or interview principles,” said Kihungi. “These workshops provided a foundation for financial education, as well as critical job search skills. This was a great opportunity for the Aspire ERG to support the community and be a steward of Fidelity’s goal to help people live the lives they want.”
Supporting workshops like these exemplifies the purpose of Fidelity ERGs, which is to enhance the understanding of diversity in the workplace, marketplace and community, as well as the company’s environment of mutual respect, the company said.
“An important focus of RICJ is youth programs and juvenile justice reforms, because today’s teens are tomorrow’s leaders,” said Toby Ayers, executive director of RICJ. “These Fidelity volunteers helped these teens build skills that they can use today, and demonstrated to them that they are respected, important members of our community.”
