Students to compete in fifth national SeaPerch Challenge

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will host 140 middle and high school student teams from around the country to participate in its fifth national SeaPerch Challenge on May 30.
The students designed, built and tested their SeaPerch underwater remotely-operated vehicles at local and regional events and winners were invited to participate in the challenge. SeaPerch is a curriculum-based program which introduces middle and high school students to STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – subjects through underwater robotics. It is the Navy’s signature K-12 outreach program.
The teams will compete at the Tripp Athletic Center to test their skills and designs by putting their SeaPerch remotely-operated vehicles through various underwater challenges. They also will present their designs at the event.
The challenge, according to a news release about the event, “is the fulfillment of the U.S. Navy’s vision to showcase future science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) talent on the national stage.”

Nearly 100 volunteers from the Navy, as well as the community and students, are supporting the event; more than 800 participants are expected.
