Study: Completion rates at private nonprofit institutions in R.I. higher than national average

PROVIDENCE – A new study by the National Student Clearinghouse looked at the ways students achieve a college degree.
It found that the overall six-year completion rate for first-time, degree-seeking college students who first enrolled in 2008 was 55 percent, including 13 percent who finished at an institution other than where they started.

The total completion rates for students who started at each of the three largest institution categories ranged from 39.1 percent for students who started at two?year public institutions to 62.8 percent for those who started at four?year public institutions and 73.6 percent for students who started at four?year private nonprofit institutions.
Statistics for Rhode Island were only available in the private, nonprofit institution category and represent six-year outcomes – 2008 to 2014.
For example, in Rhode Island, the completion rate for students who started at four-year private nonprofit institutions was 85.29 percent. That number changes to 91.4 percent when exclusively full-time students are considered, 31.4 percent when part-time students are taken into account and 65.4 percent for mixed enrollment students.
The completion rate for those who started at a four-year nonprofit institution at age 20 or younger was 88.1 percent in Rhode Island, compared with the national rate of 76.7 percent. For the age 20 to 24 age group, the completion rate was 67.3 percent, compared with 61.8 nationally. And, for those over 24, the rate was 61.6 percent in the Ocean State, compared with 55.3 percent.
Ninety-one percent of women who started at four-year private nonprofit institutions in Rhode Island completed their degree, compared with 76.8 percent nationally. That compares with nearly 80 percent of men enrolled at nonprofit Ocean State institutions, and nearly 70 percent of men nationally.
The six-year completion rate for students who started at four-year private institutions in Rhode Island in 2008 but finished in another state was 85 percent, compared with a 74 percent average nationally.
The total number of students who started at four-year private nonprofit institutions in Rhode Island was 5,199. Of that number, 4,074 were exclusively full time, and 70 were part time. A total of 1,055 represented mixed enrollment. A total of 4,590 were age 20 or younger at first entry, 259 were between 20 and 24, and 349 were older than 24. Also, 2,392 were women and 2,504 were men.
