Study: Yoga for bipolar offers rewards, minor risks

PROVIDENCE – A study authored by Brown associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior Lisa Uebelacker suggests that yoga may offer substantial benefits for many sufferers of bipolar disorder. But the study also suggests that certain people with the disorder trying yoga may see some of their symptoms worsen.

A strong majority of 70 respondents to the online survey indicated that yoga benefited them. Among the positive changes cited by respondents were decreased anxiety and a sense of calm that came from the practice.

When responding to questions about any negative effect of the practice, five respondents said that the energetic breathing made them feel agitated.

“It’s possible that you want to avoid any extreme practice, such as extended periods of rapid breathing,” Uebelacker says.
