PROVIDENCE – Last Monday, three “superheroes” scaled the Hasbro Children’s Hospital – surprising and brightening the mood of its young patients.

The idea for the event – formed in August by David Cotter, the owner of Fish Window Cleaning – came from his seeing other window cleaning companies performing similar events throughout the country.

So, with the OK of the hospital, three of Cotter’s employees donned their uniforms Monday morning and proceeded to do what they usually do, only this time dressed as Captain America, Superman and Spiderman.

“The children were thrilled,” said Linda Goodale, certified child life specialist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “It was an unexpected visit that brought smiles and delight to the faces of young patients. The children thought they were the real superheroes! It was priceless.”

Fish Window Cleaning purchased the costumes worn by its employees: Paul Tharp (Superman), Ben Magowan (Spiderman) and Carl Pieranunzi (Captain America).

When asked why he did this, Cotter said, “It was nice to see the kids smile and brighten their day. It hit home.” Cotter has two special needs children – 13-year-old twins – at home; one has Down syndrome and the other is autistic.

This is the first time the hospital has done anything like this, though a spokesperson told Providence Business News that they hope to do it again.

This is a first for Fish Window Cleaning too. The company, based in Warwick, has been in business 10 years, primarily performing window cleaning services for local businesses, though they also perform pressure washing and gutter cleaning for commercial and residential customers. They began working for Lifespan, the corporate parent of Hasbro Children’s Hospital about a year ago – though they donated their services for this project.

“We would do this for other people too,” Cotter throws out. “If they want something like that done,” he adds.
