Superman building tours reserved in minutes

MORE PUBLIC TOURS of the closed “Superman” building at 111 Westminster St. may be held early next year.

PROVIDENCE – It took only “minutes” for the latest “Superman” building tours to be reserved, according to a spokesman for the building’s owner.
“All 120 openings were reserved in a matter of minutes. In fact, the first 114 reservations were made online in three minutes,” Bill Fischer, spokesman for High Rock Development, the owner of 111 Westminster St., wrote in an email.
Reservations for the free tours, to be led by Providence Preservation Society members, became available Tuesday at 11 a.m.
The Industrial Trust Building is commonly known as the Superman building for its resemblance to the structure in comic books and the old television series.
The free tours are part of the building owner’s effort to provide public access, as the building has been closed since 2013 when Bank of America Corp. left the space.
Fischer said that scheduling of the tours around the holidays has been difficult. But those who still want a peak at the inside of one of the city’s most famous buildings can take heart – more tours are in the works.
“We recognize the interest from the general public and are looking to add more tours in January and February,” Fischer said.
