Ann Sutherland-Auclair of Auclair & Auclair, a wealth-management firm, was recently named a 2013 Five Star Wealth Manager by Rhode Island Monthly. Sutherland-Auclair was honored for overall client satisfaction on the magazine’s list of Five Star Wealth Managers, which takes into account client evaluations and reviews by peers, regulatory-compliance boards and a Blue Ribbon panel. She holds various insurance licenses, industry certifications and an M.A. in counseling psychology from Assumption College.
PBN: Less than 3 percent of wealth managers in Rhode Island were named to this list, and this is your second consecutive year on it. What do you think sets you apart from the competition?
SUTHERLAND-AUCLAIR: I believe my background in psychology is a major advantage. This work is people work. It’s all about listening to our clients. If you want to do a good job in wealth management, then I think you need to be good at listening and understanding your clients. This is very sensitive and serious work. It has a lot to do with life stages and the positives and negatives that go along with those stages. We specialize in retirement planning. When someone is 10 years from retirement they feel very differently about retirement then when they are about to retire or have just retired.
PBN: You served as executive director of a nonprofit agency for 13 years. What prompted you to switch industries?
SUTHERLAND-AUCLAIR: Well, what prompted me had everything to do with my entering a new stage of life. I love trying new things – except food! I thought it was time for a change. My husband had established a successful firm and I witnessed how he loved his job and his clients. We talked about my making this career change and we both thought it made sense not just for me but for both of us. Most people would not touch the opportunity to work with their spouse, but for me, the combination of working with a great mentor and my best friend sounded fabulous! We recognized that we had very different strengths and we would make a good business team.
PBN: Tell us what you love about your job.
SUTHERLAND-AUCLAIR: What I love most about my job is the intimate relationships that are built with our clients. We have the best clients and they have wonderful families. •
