TD sees green, donates grants to plant trees

PROVIDENCE – Sixty trees were planted along Providence’s Adelaide Avenue and on the site of the former Gorham Silver Manufacturing Co. in the city’s Reservoir Triangle by various community members, according to Groundwork Providence.

A nonprofit group working to create healthier, greener communities throughout the state, the work done on Saturday was overseen by Groundwork Providence and funded by a $20,000 TD Green Streets grant. TD Bank, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, awarded the city of Providence Department of Parks and Recreation with the grant as part of its campaign to support innovation in urban forestry.

Amelia Rose, executive director of Groundwork Providence, was thrilled Providence was chosen as one of the cities to receive funding from TD Bank. She explained the funds will also be used to improve the water quality of Mashapaug Pond and increase the city’s tree canopy.

Mashapaug Pond is a natural gem and now that the Gorham site cleanup is almost complete, people are really coming together to turn this space into a wonderful new public park that is open and accessible to all,” she said.

Rose explained Groundwork Providence will provide a year’s worth of maintenance for the new landscaping through its GroundCorp program, which sees graduates from their job training program employed at green sites across associated with residents, businesses and non-profits in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls.

In addition to Providence, 2016 TD Green Street grants were awarded to communities in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Bloomfield and Camden, New Jersey; Hollywood and Miami, Florida; New Haven, Connecticut; Newburgh, New York; Rock Hill, South Carolina; and Worcester, Massachusetts.

Formed in 2013 by TD Bank and The Arbor Day Foundation, qualified municipalities were required to be current Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA–designated communities within TD Bank’s U.S. footprint in order to be eligible for the funding.
